Less than two weeks until the 2017 Annecy International Animation Film Festival kicks off and anticipation has reached a fever pitch — with good reason. The industry’s biggest talents of today and tomorrow are converging on France, and Mifa is where they will get things done. Running June 13 to 16 in the Impérial Palace, it is the world’s premiere animation market. First time? Overwhelmed and not sure where to start? Toon Boom has been at Mifa since the beginning and can guide you on the best things to see and do.

And there’s more to do this year than ever. Mifa 2017 promises to be bigger and better — literally. After a decade of continuous growth, the event is a day longer and 1,000 sq. metres larger than 2016. With 2,800 badge holders, 370 buyers and distributors, studios recruiting and 68 countries represented, every moment of Mifa 2017 is an opportunity to pitch, network and learn from the biggest names in the biz.

See why China is 2017’s animation nation.
Annecy 2017 will be highlighting the work of the Chinese animation industry. With a history stretching back to the Wan brothers in the 1920s and 30s, the Asian superpower’s cartoon market made a comeback beginning in the 1970s and it continues today. In 2015, China’s animation industry was worth $17 billion. Beyond the “China, Art in Motion” exhibit in the Château d’Annecy, those hoping to tap into this huge and growing market should know there will be a Chinese delegation at Mifa, led by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT), with a 183 sq. metre pavilion.

Meet Guillermo del Toro at Mifa Campus.
New for 2017 is Mifa Campus, an event created to bridge the gap between emerging and established talents in animation. Running 10:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. on June 13 in the Impérial Palace Hotel, students, entry-level professionals and experts will come together to discuss topics ranging from education to the creative process to recruitment. The event will be broken down into ‘Workshops’, ‘Initiatives and Schemes’, and ‘Chat With’ sessions with animation studios. Director Guillermo del Toro, whose 3D animated Netflix series “Trollhunters” had 21 nominations at the Daytime Emmys last month, will serve as patron of the inaugural Mifa Campus and host a special “Conversation With” session.

Recruit and be recruited!
Mifa 2017 is the place you want to be, whether you’re seeking talented animation professionals or you are the one looking for a job. On the recruiter side, you have the option to search through candidates IRL in the open or recruitment space, or via URL by putting a job posting on the Annecy Network. Similarly, as a candidate you can log in to review postings and apply to those that fit. Feeling overwhelmed? The Mifa team is also there to help facilitate appointments between recruiters and candidates.

Be a journalist for a day — or three!
Ever wondered what it’s like being an entertainment reporter covering animation? Mifa 2017 is your chance to experience it. There will be daily press conferences Tuesday, June 13, through Thursday, June 15, at the Impérial Palace. This year, the studios, youth channels and TV groups hosting events include Disney Channel (Tuesday), France Télévisions, Lagardère Active, Les Espoirs de l’Animation (all Wednesday) and Canal+Family (Thursday).

Get engaged at the Women in Animation World Summit.
From characters to creators, animation is increasingly scrutinized for its (lack of) representation of women. Fortunately, industry leaders are coming together and collaborating to change that at the first-ever Women in Animation World Summit. Held on June 12 in the Impérial Palace Hotel, it is a joint initiative by Women in Animation and its sisters organization, Les Femmes s’Animent (LFA). Panel topics will include “Exploring Unconscious Bias”, “50/50 by 2025 — How are We Getting There?” and “Developing Diverse Stories”.

Take a break at the Video Library.
Too busy at Mifa to swing by Annecy next door? Take a quick movie break between meetings to catch a movie at the Video Library. There are 25 viewing stations across Mifa giving attendees free access to a catalogue of over 400 productions and projects, including the Festival’s Official Selection.
