#ToonChat is an online event where animators and artists gather to discuss topics on Twitter on the last Friday of the month from 6-7PM EST.

The topic of this month’s #ToonChat discussion is Storyboarding Roles & Careers. Joining us as this session’s guest expert is Jake Hollander from The Animation Story Group and we will also be joined by Karen C. Johnson, President of The Animation Guild.

The conversation will include the following discussion topics:

  • The role of story artists in the preproduction process.
  • Tips for storyboard portfolios and what recruiters look for.
  • How the story artist's role is changing.

About the chat:

If this is your first time participating in a Twitter chat, here is how the format works: Users meet on Twitter on Friday July 26 at 6PM EST using the #ToonChat hashtag. Over the course of an hour, our account (@ToonBoom) will pose six questions (numbered Q1, Q2, Q3 …) to prompt responses from our chat participants. Be sure to include the #ToonChat hashtag in all your posts to make it easy for other participants to discover your comments. Respectful discussion between participants and our guest experts is always encouraged.

About our guests:

Jake Hollander (story artist on Disenchantment, Duncanville) is joining us as a guest in this Friday's chat as a member of the The Animation Story Group. The Animation Story Group is a collective of Animation Guild members representing the story artist community. The group's goal is to educate union members, non-union members, and aspiring artists with comics and videos about the industry. The group recently started a three-part series about getting hired as a story artist. You can find The Animation Story Group on Twitter as @TAGStoryGroup.

The Animation Guild (IATSE Local 839) is a labor organization that represents animation artists, writers and technicians. The guild negotiates wage minimums and working conditions, provides pension and health benefits (specifically through the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plan) and acts as an advocate for members over disputes between employees and employers. Their goal is to provide a seamless cloak of benefits and the strength of a collective voice to members across the animation industry. You can find The Animation Guild on Twitter at @animationguild.

Be sure to join this month's conversation using the #ToonChat hashtag.
